Citrate synthase is an enzyme that plays a critical role in energy production within mitochondria. Its levels are often considered a proxy for mitochondrial content or biomass (i.e., amount of mitochondria).
In ME/CFS, there is a growing body of evidence indicating that there is disruption in energy production. Mitochondrial dysfunction (mitochondria not working right) is often associated with that disruption in energy production, but a lower amount of mitochondria also might be a contributing factor.
OMF’s Ronald G. Tompkins Harvard ME/CFS Collaboration has a study investigating post-exertional malaise via muscle biopsy. Preliminary results from citrate synthase measurements on the baseline muscle biopsies indicate mitochondrial biomass is reduced in people with ME/CFS.
